from
February 6-15, 2004, the Tango and
Malambo Festival embraces art music of popular inspiration
in various manifestations throughout the city, from classical performances
to free tango lessons in downtown Santa Barbara. With its natural beauty,
Santa Barbara is one of the most desired destinations on California’s
South Coast, just a 1 ½ drive from Los Angeles.
The
Festival is a collaborative effort of

.
The Santa Barbara International Film Festival
UCSB “Arts and Lectures” . Tango Santa Barbara . The Paseo
Nuevo Mall . Café Buenos Aires.
The ten day long event takes its title from the music and
dance traditions of urban ( the Tango) and rural ( the Malambo) Argentina.
Gisele Ben-Dor , the Artistic Director ,explains that “the personality
of this music and dances have created an identity which has now become
internationally acknowledged and embraced.” The Honorary President
of the festival is Mme. Georgina Ginastera, daughter of the great Argentine
composer.
Opportunities for the public to learn the tango are also included.Members
of Tango Santa Barbara will be available at the downtown El Paseo Nuevo
Mall on Saturday afternoons, February 7 and 14, to teach anyone who wanders
by. And the public is invited to dance the tango with expert Argentines
and live music at a traditional Milonga , or just listen to ongoing tango
ensembles performing in Santa Barbara clubs during the festival.
