Astor Piazzolla’s Buenos Aires:Tres Movimientos Sinfonicos (1953) receives its US premiere, and the first since 1953. A unique,full scale symphonic work by the young Piazzolla for large orchestra with bandoneon, the quintessential tango instrument, it will be brought to new life as a unique creation, to be subsequently recorded by the Santa Barbara Symphony in a world premiere recording.


The premiere of a Triple Concerto for piano, soprano and bandoneón by Oscar winning composer Luis Bacalov ( “Il Postino”) featuring the composer at the piano , with Juan Jose Mosalini, considered one of the most important and well- known bandoneon players worldwide, will be another one- of –a- kind presentation. Other works include the Overture to the Creole Faust by Alberto Ginastera and more tango inspired music.( Adios Nonino)

Tango: The Obsession (1997) written and directed by Adam Boucher is the definitive documentary on the history of tango. It is a homage to the generation of milongueros that kept the tango alive through the years of fierce competition with rock and roll and a frail economy that almost brought Argentina to its knees. As part of “Arts and Lectures”, Campbell Hall, UCSB, Monday night, February 9.

 

 



Il Postino (1995) directed by Michael Radford with Massimo Triossi in his final role. Composer Luis Enríque Bacalov won the 1996 Academy Award for best score. Mr. Bacalov will be present at the screening and offer comments on the score and its relevance to his current musical style. In Italian with English subtitles. In English. THE EXILE OF GARDEL
Directed by Fernando E. Solanas (1985).
A group of Argentines in Paris who were forced to leave their homeland after the 1976 coup, stage a set of tangos, their passionate rehearsals to magical music contrasting with their lonely lives in a foreign land. In Spanish and French with English subtitles.

State Street Ballet, as part of their subscription series, will offer the US Premiere of the complete, rousing Estancia, Ginastera’s most strikingly nationalist work, in an original choreographic creation by James Gamonet, including the sung gauchesco segments based on major Latin American poetry. Performed with Stravinsky’s Tango as well as other original works, such as Tango Nuevo , choreographed by William Soleau, and a new work based on Argentine popular song. Lobero Theatre, Saturday and Sunday, first weekend, February 7 and 8.

Café Buenos Aires hosts an evening of Tango social dancing with expert Argentines and instructors from Tango Santa Barbara, accompanied by live music. Wednesday night, February 11.



Tango Lessons at the Mall ,an exhibition of tango dances and free hands-on lessons by experienced dancers ,for young and old passers-by, on the streets of the downtown Paseo Nuevo Mall. Both Saturday afternoons, 7 and 14.

 

 

 

 


Sandor and Parissa Acclaimed tango dancers Sandor and Parissa spectacular performances will be featured on Feb 6, opening party, and Feb 12 at “The Story of Tango” at UCSB.

 

The Symphony’s Friday Concerts for Young People will be devoted to “Dances of the Americas”, a new program celebrating American and Latin American dances , with a demonstration of bandoneon playing and dancing.

The Story of Tango An evening of music, dance and film clips assembled and narrated by Pablo Aslan under the auspices of UCSB’s Music Department. Mr. Aslan is an Argentine-born bassist, composer and tango scholar, director of Avantango and a founder member of the New York Buenos Aires Connection and New York Tango Trio. Mr. Aslan will be joined by composer/pianist Luis Bacalov, bandoneon player Juan Jose Mosalini and dancers Sandor and Parissa. The Story of Tango was first produced for the New World Symphony in April, 2002.
